Pre-owned Rolex Explorer ref 214270 (2020) was an important release for the series because it introduced a larger 39mm case after decades of sticking with the traditional 36mm format. The larger case size brought the Explorer in line with modern watch tastes, but as it so often goes in watchmaking, there was certainly room for improvement. While the case grew, the dial proportions stayed mostly the same. Many collectors felt the hands looked a touch too short against the wider dial. Rolex addressed that feedback in 2016 with the Mark II Rolex 214270 for sale here, adding slightly longer hands and fully luminescent Arabic numerals for better balance and legibility. The end result is a more refined, thoughtfully corrected Explorer that still respects the model’s understated, tool-watch roots. Rolex later retired the 39mm Explorer in favor of today’s 36mm and 40mm options, but ref. 214270 remains in demand for its transitional role in the series.
