This 5513 is in overall great, vintage condition. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The inner case back is stamped "5513" and "II.67." Serial and reference numbers are visible. This has retained it's correct crown (no 3 dots under crown) and it shows some wear. The "Long 5" bezel insert is in overall good, attractive condition with some scratches and normal signs of wear. The "meters first" dial is in overall great condition with light patina and some wear around the edge. The lume plots on the dial are all full and have aged to an attractive pale yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume has developed patina and are a bit darker than the lume on the dial; when looking closely the hour hand shows some cracks. It has a stainless steel 7206 rivet Oyster bracelet with 12 links and no. 58 end links; the clasp is stamped "1-67" indicating it is from 1967. The rivet Oyster bracelet is in great condition with normal signs of wear and a little stretch between the links. The crystal has some scratches.
Pre-owned Rolex Submariner 5513 (1967) introduced around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte around 1966, like this example. When Rolex went to the matte dial they kept the depth rating as "200m = 660ft" and these are known as "meters first" in the collecting community. Eventually Rolex would swap the depth rating to feet first around the early 1970s and have continued this trend to the modern offerings. One theory on this change is that Rolex wanted to boost sales in the United States, but to our knowledge Rolex has not made any definitive statements on this shift.
The example we have here is fresh to market coming from the family of the original owner who managed to keep the box and papers all these years; it even has the cigarette card which told the owner to use the box for cigarettes - how the times have changed! This 5513 is in overall lovely condition; from the nicely aged lume to the Swiss rivet Oyster bracelet, this has the quintessential look and feel collectors gravitate towards.
