This King Midas is in overall great, vintage condition. The case is strong with some wear, scratches, and some light nicks; it has been polished. The case back still has two hallmarks visible, and the three o'clock side has one visible hallmark in the center. The other hallmark shows signs of polishing. The dial and hands are in great condition and have developed patina. The dial has a couple slight imperfections that can be hard to notice depending on the lighting. The Rolex strap is in great condition with signs of wear. The gold-plated Rolex buckle shows signs of wear and peeling.
The King Midas Rolex is unlike any other watch in the brand's collection with its asymmetrical-shaped case. The watch was developed by the late Gérald Genta, known in many watch-collecting circles for his exquisite designs. The original model earned its name, "King Midas," after the stunning all-gold finish, which seems more than appropriate, considering that King Midas is also a Greek God known for turning everything he touched into gold.
Rolex made many different versions of the "King Midas" over the years, including this example on a leather strap. It also has the famous "Cellini" moniker on the dial in elegant font. This watch is a striking "left-handed" version with the crown on the nine o'clock side of the case. It was uncommon back then for Rolex to make "lefty" watches, but the brand is embracing the trend in recent years with the release of the new lefty GMT.
The Cellini "King Midas" we have here is in overall great, honest condition and is a stand-out statement piece. This version on leather is understandably a bit more understated than the edition on a matching gold bracelet. These watches are generally not very common, and we have seen demand for these models increase recently. What's also intriguing about the King Midas is that Elvis Presley was known to wear the watch on a bracelet back in the day, adding even further to its overall collectability.
