This Rolex watch is in vintage condition with noticeable surface wear to the bracelet, case and bezel all consistent with age. The case is in good condition with wear and scratches, it was probably polished. The numbers and writing on the back of the case are all visible. The dial and hands are in great condition with patina. The lume in the hands has aged to a pale yellow color. The lume on the dial is all gone and signs of the previous plots is visible at some hours. The dial has developed patina and was originally silver, it has a slightly beige/ champane-ish hue now. The bracelet is in great condition with some scratches and wear. The clasp is stamped "B" indicating it is from 1977 which makes sense for the production of this example.
At first glance, the Rolex 1530 for sale here looks like an OysterQuartz model. It has the same angular case and integrated bracelet that defines the unique series. However, while the OysterQuartz is powered by a battery-operated Quartz movement, the Rolex 1530 relies on Rolex's Perpetual mechanical movement with automatic winding technology.
The story behind this rare watch is fascinating. Rolex released ref. 1530 during the same time that they were designing the OysterQuartz series. The Quartz movement was still in development, but the intriguing case had already been perfected and was ready for production. Rolex equipped the case with a Perpetual movement and sold the watch as ref. 1530 while they continued work on the Quartz movement. Only about 1,500 of these rare watches were produced between 1975 and 1977. After 1977, the OysterQuartz model took its place.
This example dates to circa 1978 which would make it one of the last ones made since production was until around 1977. The watch is in overall honest, attractive condition and has developed a nice patina on the dial. These are perfect for those looking for an interesting Rolex with a story.
