Vintage Watch Condition Examination
This Rolex is in great, honest vintage condition. The case is in good condition with scratches and wear; it appears to have been polished. The caseback shows some signs of opening and the bottom edge of the case from one to five o'clock has scratches / nicks. The smooth bezel is in great condition with some wear and nicks along the edge. The dial has developed patina and presents as a lovely cream color throughout. It has developed some areas of darker patina (one to note is a spot near four o'clock in the center) and has signs of radium burn from the hands at five o'clock. The lume in the hands and on the dial have aged to a beige color and has developed patina. The minute hand shows some degradation to the lume with some small holes, this can be hard to notice with the cream colored dial beneath. Most of the lume plots on the dial have darkened/ developed dark patina. The crystal has some wear.
Rolex Oyster 6098 Stainless Steel
Before there was the Rolex Explorer, there was the Oyster Perpetual "Big Bubbleback" ref. 6098, the watch worn on Mount Everest. Also known as "Overtone," the case features a larger, more rounded case back to accommodate the thicker automatic movement.
While most bubbleback watches at the time were 32mm - 34mm in diameter, ref. 6098 sports a slightly larger 36mm case, hence the name "Big Bubbleback." The case also features a "Super Oyster Crown" that does not screw down into the case. Instead, it pushes in, a design element adopted briefly by Rolex to cater to customers who often forgot to screw their crown back into the case after setting the time. Rolex didn't use this type of crown for long, making it a desirable feature of this stunning vintage OP. The dial also features signs of radium burn from the lume on the hands, just another element that makes this vintage Rolex such a great find!
