Good: Wearable, with visible signs of wear.

This watch is in overall great, honest vintage condition. The case is strong with normal signs of wear throughout with scratches and nicks. The inside caseback is stamped " 421 1665 IV.67." The 421 corresponds to the last 3 digits of the serial number. The text on the outside caseback shows some wear and is fully visible. The bezel is overall great condition with some scratches and has faded from black to a lovely greyish-blue color. The crown is a later trip-lock replacement with three dots. The dial is in great, honest condition with some patina, wear along the edge, there are also a few scratches throughout that can be hard to see in most lighting conditions. The center of the dial looks to have some hand-drag from the hour hand that can be hard to notice with the crystal on. The lume plot at 12 shows some lume missing at the bottom tip, this could have been from a hand dragging across it. The two lines of red text have faded to a pale-pink tone which is not uncommon for these. The lume has developed patina and aged to a lovely pale yellow color. The hands have developed patina and were relumed at some point in the past. The bracelet is in good, honest condition with scratches and normal wear with some stretch between the links. It features a stainless steel folded Oyster 9315 bracelet with 12 links, no. 285 end links, and a divers' extension stamped "Pat Pend." The clasp is stamped "03 70" dating it to 1970.
Here we have a lovely Rolex Ref. 1665 Double Red "Patent Pending" Sea-Dweller, dating to circa 1969. The Sea-Dweller is one of the rarest vintage Rolex sports models, first introduced in 1967 and still in production today.
Developed for professional deep-sea saturation divers, the Sea-Dweller introduced the innovative Helium Escape Valve (HEV), located on the 9 o'clock side of the case. This patented feature allowed the watch to safely release trapped helium during decompression, preventing damage to the crystal in pressurized diving environments.
The earliest Sea-Dwellers featured a single line of red text above the 6 o'clock marker, earning them the nickname "Single Red." The watch featured here is the more recognizable "Double Red" variant, with both "Sea-Dweller" and "Submariner 2000" printed in red. Rolex produced Double Red Sea-Dwellers until around 1978, when the dial transitioned to all-white text. That remained the standard until 2017, when Rolex celebrated the model's 50th anniversary with a 43mm Sea-Dweller featuring a single line of red text once again.
This example is from the earlier years of production and features the coveted "Patent Pending" caseback, a detail that elevates an already rare reference into an exceptionally scarce one. It also retains a Mark I dial, where the original red printing has naturally aged to a beautiful pink hue, a characteristic often seen on these early examples. We especially love how the faded lettering complements the ghost bezel and creamy lume plots, giving the watch a wonderfully balanced vintage aesthetic.
