Vintage Watch Condition Examination
This 16800 is in overall great, attractive condition. The case is strong with scratches and appears to have been polished. The bezel insert has faded to an attractive and even grey color throughout. The bezel also has some wear and scratches. The pip in the bezel has developed patina and darkened. The dial is in excellent condition with patina. The lume on the dial has aged to an attractive pale yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has darkened . The seconds hand has developed oxidation and the lume has darkened more than the others. When looking closely under a loupe the lume in the hands show some signs of cracking. The bracelet is in great condition with light wear and light stretch between the links. The clasp is stamped "G" which corresponds to 1982 which makes sense for the production of the watch.
Vintage Rolex Submariner 16800
The Rolex 16800 was the first Submariner to feature a sapphire crystal and had increased water resistance up to 1,000 feet. It also introduced the series to the high-beat cal. 3035 movement with a quick-set date function. The 16800 is referred to as a transitional model because at the beginning of the production run the watches featured matte dials like the previous 1680 and later in the production Rolex changed the dials to glossy with white gold bordering the lume. These early 16800s with matte dials are the perfect mix of vintage styling with modern touches like the sapphire glass and quick-set date.
The example we have here has aged beautifully over the years. It features a lovely faded bezel and nicely aged lume on the dial. The combination of these characteristics gives this Sub a quintessentially vintage look and unique aesthetic.

Watch was in condition as pictured and described. Some major dents and scuffs on the bracelet/end-link were hidden well by the lighting but were very noticeable in person. Overall the watch was in great shape for the age.

I’ve bought multiple modern pieces from Bob’s and had a great experience every time. I’ve been looking to buy a birth year Rolex for awhile now and for me, that’s a late production run 16800. Couldn’t be happier with the watch and for those out there looking for a Sub, you should seriously consider the 16800. It has some great “modern” features, but holds true to a more vintage feel and elegance. Incredibly comfortable on the wrist and will undoubtedly continue to grow in value in my opinion. It’s a can’t miss buy all the way around.
