This 5513 is in overall excellent, honest condition. The case is strong with scratches and some light nicks. The bevels are still visible on the lugs. The case was probably lightly polished at some point. The bezel ring has remained fairly sharp. The bezel insert has aged over the years to a a pretty even gray color throughout with some wear and scratches. The watch has retained its correct non-triplock crown. The dial is in overall great condition and is still very glossy. It has some wear and a few scratches that can be hard to notice depending on the light. One scratch to note on the dial is towards the center between one and two o’clock. The hands are in great condition and have developed patina/ oxidation on the borders which is not uncommon. The lume on the dial and in the hands has aged to a matching pale yellow color. Some of the lume plots on the dial show signs of degradation. The rivet oyster bracelet is in great condition with some scratches. It has a little stretch between the links and is in remarkable condition for the age and this type of bracelet. The dome crystal is in good condition with some wear and light scratches.
Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte after 1966. The circa 1966 example features a lovely glossy-gilt dial and is the last glossy variation before Rolex made the switch to matte dials. Collectors refer to this specific style dial as a “Bart Simpson” because the Coronet on the dial is in such a shape it is reminiscent of the cartoon character's head. These “Bart” dials have a little extra character and we see many collectors gravitate towards them and specifically seek these out.
The watch we have here is fresh to market and is one of the nicest glossy dial 5513’s to come across our desks in a long time. The watch is overall super honest and clearly lived a life, but was taken care of. The correct “long 5” bezel aged nicely to a grey color throughout and really pops against the glossy black dial. The lume on the dial and in the hands has all aged to a beautiful pale yellow color that gives this Sub a quintessential vintage aesthetic. In addition this watch has retained its original and correct rivet-oyster bracelet that just completes the look and feel of the watch when strapped on a wrist. The case number lines up to 1966, the inside caseback is stamped “IV.66” and the bracelet is stamped “I.67” so everything lines up which is always something we love to see. If you are in the market for a glossy 5513 this one is worth considering.
