Pre-Owned Watch Condition Examination:
This Submariner is in great vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The case is strong with some wear, scratches and nicks; it appears to be unpolished. The bevels on the edges of the lugs are still visible. The bezel ring has remained sharp and the insert is in great condition with some light wear and scratches. The bezel ring has remained sharp. The pip at 12 has developed patina that matches the lume on the dial. The caseback is engraved "To Lee Love Always Ruth 4-30-82". The "Maxi Mark IV" dial is overall clean with light patina. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to an attractive custard color. Some of the lume plots show signs of degradation; one of note is the seven o'clock plot has some material missing; this can be hard to notice depending on the lighting. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a pleasing caramel color. The hands are a bit darker than the lume on the dial which is not uncommon. The bracelet is in great condition with some scratches and wear, it has light stretch between the links. The crystal is a service replacement and in great condition; we kept the crystal that came on the watch and it will be sent to the new owner.
Description: Vintage Rolex Submariner 5513 Maxi Mark IV Dial
Pre-Owned Rolex Submariner ref 5513 (Circa 1981) was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte around 1966. Rolex made many variations of the matte dial and this circa 1981 example has a "Maxi" dial. Rolex made these "Maxi" dials from around 1978 to 1984. "Maxi" refers to the lume plots being larger than the ones on previous 5513s. This watch has a Mark IV dial and some characteristics of this variation would be the word Submariner above the depth rating and it being shorter in length than the depth rating below. This variation also has a "zigzag S" in Submariner.
This 5513 has a very cohesive look from the case to the bracelet and bezel, everything matches in terms of condition and has a great overall look and feel. In addition to being a great, honest example, this watch comes directly from the wife of the original owner who gave it to her husband for their wedding. She picked the Submariner because her husband was a diver and has a personalized engraving on the back to commemorate the occasion.
