This vintage Submariner is in overall good, attractive vintage condition. The case is in good condition with scratches and normal signs of wear. The inner caseback is stamped: "5513.” The serial and reference numbers are clearly visible between the lugs. The bezel insert is in great condition with light wear and is a later service replacement. The matte dial is in great condition and has developed some darker patina around the edge and in the center under the hand-set. The lume has developed patina and aged to a lovely pale-yellow sandy color. The hands have developed patina and the lume has developed some darker patina towards the base of the hour and minutes hands. The lume in the seconds hand is starting to crack and the minute hand has a small pin-hole in the lume. This watch has a 93150 bracelet with no. 580 end links, divers extension, and 12 links. The clasp is stamped "H" indicating it's from 1983. The bracelet is in overall good, honest condition with scratches and wear throughout; the bracelet has some stretch between the links. The clasp has some wear/indentations on the sides and a deeper scratch on towards the bottom of the clasp. The flip-lock has been repaired and is tight when operating.
Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte dials around 1966. When Rolex went to the matte dial they also put the depth rating as "200m = 660ft" and these are known as "meters first" in the collecting community. Eventually Rolex would swap the depth rating to feet first around the early 1970s and have continued this trend to the modern offerings. The watch we have here has a "feet first" depth rating. One theory on this change is that Rolex wanted to boost sales in the United States, but to our knowledge Rolex has not made any definitive statements on this shift.
