This 5512 is in overall great, honest vintage condition. The case is in good condition with scratches, nicks, and wear throughout; the bevels are still visible. The tip of the five o’clock lug has an indentation. The back of the case is stamped "5513" and "IV.66.” Serial and reference numbers are clearly visible. The bezel ring has remained sharp. The "Long 5" bezel insert has some scratches and wear along the edges; it has faded beautifully over the years to an even grey color. The pip is a later replacement. The crown is a later "trip-lock" replacement. The dial has developed a textured/ spotted patina throughout with areas of wear (center & edge) dial giving it a unique look. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a lovely buttery yellow color; the plots show signs of degradation. The hands have developed patina and are later replacements. The lume in the hands show some wear and the color works with lume on the dial nicely. The C& I rivet oyster bracelet is in honest condition with some wear throughout; it has 12 links. The clasp is stamped “77” indicating it's from 1977.
Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte the matte style after 1966. The example we have here is circa 1966 and would be part of the last run of glossy dials.
This example is in beautiful, honest condition, with the dial exhibiting a distinctive spotted, almost stingray-skin like, patina that gives the watch an instantly recognizable character. We love how the "Long 5" bezel has aged to an even grey tone. Combined with the C&I bracelet, these elements give the 5513 the quintessential look and feel collectors gravitate towards.
