This 5512 is in overall great, honest vintage condition. The case is in good condition with scratches, nicks, and wear throughout; the bevels are still visible. The leading edge of the bottom right lug has minor indentations. The back of the case is stamped "5513" and "I.66.” Serial and reference numbers are clearly visible. The bezel ring has remained sharp. The "Long 5" bezel insert has some scratches and wear; the largest of which is just to the right of lume pip triangle. The lume pip is damaged and the housing around it has shattered. The crown is a later "trip-lock" replacement. The dial has developed a spider webbing effect mainly around its periphery, giving it a unique look. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a lovely buttery yellow color; the plots show small signs of degradation. The hands have developed patina and are also showing signs of degradation. The lume in the hands show some wear and the color works with lume on the dial nicely. The oyster bracelet is in great condition with very little wear throughout; it has 12 links. The clasp is stamped “CP 12” indicating it's a later replacement post 2011, and the clasp still closes with a secure snap.
Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte the matte style after 1966. The example we have here is circa 1966 and would be part of the last run of glossy dials.
This example is in beautiful, honest condition, with the dial exhibiting a distinctive webbing, lume patina that gives the watch an instantly recognizable character. We love how the "Long 5" bezel has stayed black. Combined with the 93150 bracelet, these elements give the 5513 the quintessential look and feel collectors gravitate towards.
