This Submariner is in overall great vintage condition. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear, there is a slight indentation on the edge of the five o'clock lug. The inside caseback is stamped "1680", and the numbers are clearly visible between the lugs. The bezel ring has remained sharp and the bezel is a later service replacement and is in great condition with almost no wear. The dial (Swiss only) and hands are in great condition and are later service replacements. The dial and hands feature Super-LumiNova luminous material and will still glow. This watch has a 93150 bracelet with 12 links, no 580 end links and divers extension. The bracelet clasp is stamped "CP 12" indicating it's a randomized clasp code and is post 2011. The bracelet is in overall great condition with some scratches, normal wear and a bit of stretch between the links. The crystal is a Rolex service replacement with light wear.
Vintage Rolex Submariner ref 1680 (1978) is one of the most iconic vintage watches on the market. It hails from the legendary Submariner collection, complete with an Oyster case, 60-minute diver's bezel, and self-winding movement. The 1680 also holds a special place in Rolex history as the first Submariner to feature a date mechanism on the dial. Rolex initially made the 1680 with a single line of red text on the dial and would later move to all white text like the example we have here. These "White" 1680s have gained popularity and good ones are becoming harder and harder to find.
It was very common for Rolex to change and update watches when they come in for routine service and that is exactly what happened to this 1680. These all serviced up examples offer a great value and are ideal for daily wearers. This one with the "Swiss only" dial will still glow in the dark because of the Super-LumiNova luminous material used. These offer the perfect blend of modern and vintage all wrapped into one.
This example comes directly from the family of the original owner and was recently sent to Rolex for a complete service in 2025. We believe the watch is fitted with the newest generation Rolex service dial for the reference 1680, as the dial has some updated characteristics compared to other service dials.
The watch is accompanied by a NFC enabled Rolex service warranty card (it works by putting next to a smart phone with NFC capabilities), which we have verified the serial number that pops up matches the watch. It also includes a photocopy of the Rolex service receipt (with corresponding serial number), detailing the service work performed, including case refinishing and the replacement of the dial, hands, bezel insert, bezel ring, and bracelet. The total cost of this service exceeded $3,500. Additionally, the watch comes with the newest style green Rolex service pouch featuring the “Rolex World Service” insignia.
