This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 56175SA is in overall great, honest vintage condition with normal signs of wear for its age. The case is in great condition with scratches and normal signs of wear throughout. The writing (Audemars Piguet Quartz No. 60XX) including the "D" serial on the caseback are all clearly legible. The gold bezel is in good condition with some scratches and normal signs of wear; the shape is still pretty prominent around the points. The dial is in overall great condition with light patina. The hour markers and hands have developed patina and the lume has aged to a similar color. The integrated bracelet is in overall great condition with 22 links. The bracelet has normal signs of wear and scratches throughout; it has light stretch overall. The clasp is signed by AP and functions well.
The AP presentation box that this comes with is missing the pillow inside and the guarantee was never filled in.
Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak in 1972, claiming the title as the first luxury sports watch. Initially, the Gérald Genta masterpiece was only available in one variation - the ref. 5402. It took AP a few years to expand upon the collection, adding a women's model to the mix (aka Royal Oak II) in 1976, followed by different metal finishes, case sizes, and even movement types, including quartz. Today, the portfolio is home to more than 500 different RO variations. So what makes this model so special? The watch is svelte, at around 6mm thick, and boasts a very approachable size and weight for men and women alike. Additionally, the ref. 56175SA is a steel and gold model with a striking grey "Petite Tapisserie" dial decorated with applied yellow gold markers, matching gold hands, and an old font logo with a sans serif typeface.
The watch has all the usual Royal Oak design elements, including the angular case with a matching integrated bracelet, an octagonal bezel with exposed screws, and a faceted crown. While quite unorthodox in 1972, this aesthetic would influence many of the industry's top brands with similar offerings from Patek Philippe, Rolex, and more. This model hails from the collection that started it all, and now you can add a striking vintage two-tone variation with a reliable quartz movement and an approachable mid-size case to your collection.
