This vintage Santos Dumont reference 96053 is in honest overall good, vintage condition. The case is in good condition with some scratches throughout and some tarnishing of the gold next to the crown. The high polish bezel has a few scratches and small dents around the edges, it appears to be unpolished as the countersinks are crisp and very circular. The cabochon on the crown is in great condition with no signs of damage. The text on the caseback is in good order and is all visible with some light scratching from wear. The hallmarks on the caseback are still crisp and there are no visible signs of previous polishing. The white dial is on overall excellent condition with no signs of patina or wearing. The blued hands are in great condition with the hour hand showing very slight patina, this is hard to see even under higher magnification. This has a 13mm strap with a matching gold tone tang buckle.
The Cartier Santos Dumont reference 96053 is a great way to wear an iconic model, not only to horology but for Cartier, without having to worry about it being 'oversized' for smaller wrists. Measuring in at 23mm, the watch wears a bit larger than its on-paper dimensions might seem as a square case always appears larger on the wrist when compared to their circular counterparts. Featuring all of the design cues that help define Cartier's aesthetic such as a Roman numeral dial (with the somewhat hidden "Cartier" signature in the 10-hour mark), outer railroad minutes track, shorter blued hands and cabochon crown. Housing a thin manual wind movement, this watch might wear larger than its dimension lead on to believe but it will definitely not wear taller (sitting at 4.2mm thick). A great watch to pick up for those who have smaller wrists or for those who want to wear an icon of the industry but don't feel comfortable pulling off the full-size variant, let alone the 100 XL.
The watch looked nice in pictures, but was even better in person. For a pre-owned Cartier watch, it almost looks new.
