Pre-owned IWC Big Pilot’s Watch ref IW501001 (2019) is the modern continuation of one of the most recognizable aviation watches ever made. The design traces its roots back to the oversized navigation watches IWC produced for military pilots in the 1940s. Those original models were meant to be worn over flight jackets and needed to be readable at a glance in the cockpit. The Big Pilot still carries that same philosophy today. This example features a large 46.2mm stainless steel case with a clean black dial and bold Arabic numerals. Everything is designed for legibility. Large hands. Strong luminescent markers. And the signature oversized conical crown, originally made so pilots could operate the watch while wearing gloves. The dial also includes a power reserve display at 3 o’clock, a defining feature of the modern Big Pilot.
Inside is IWC’s automatic movement with Pellaton winding, delivering an impressive seven-day power reserve. The watch also features a soft-iron inner case to protect against magnetic fields, along with a crystal secured against sudden pressure changes in flight. Paired with a black calfskin strap, the IW501001 remains a direct descendant of the cockpit instruments that inspired it.
