The Air-King ref. 5500 in stainless steel is an entry-level vintage Rolex that is highly regarded by avid collectors for its sophisticated feature set and intriguing history. The line was developed by Hans Wilsdorf in the 1940s and was a member of the Air Series of watches that were designed to honor the pilots of the British Royal Air Force. Eventually, the other models in the series were discontinued, save for the Air-King, which is still in production today. The ref. 5500 is a popular choice among preowned Rolex collectors for its affordable, brushed steel finish as well as its modest 34mm Oyster case and elegant, three-hand dial. The ref. 5500 has recently experienced renewed interest among collectors after making several appearances on the wrist of actor Ryan Gosling.
