Rolex Air-King 5500 - Black Dial
The Rolex Air-King history began in 1945, during the height of World War II. Originally developed as a pilots watch for the combat pilots of the British Royal Air Force, the Air-King boasted a tough Oyster case that was waterproof and resistant to higher altitudes. The particular reference 5500 that we have here today came to market in 1957, just over a decade after the first Air-King was released. Just like the Air-King watches before it, the ref. 5500 offered a stainless steel 34mm Oyster case with a smooth bezel, protective acrylic crystal, and a self-winding movement. This men's watch is also accompanied by a black dial topped with silver index hour markers and sweeping hour, minute, and seconds hands. An affordable option when shopping for a vintage Rolex with character and history, the Air-King ref. 5500 is ideal for first-time collectors.
