Similar to what Rolex did with the men’s Datejust 41, the brand also introduced white metal versions of the Lady-Datejust 28 at Baselworld 2017. Before we take a look at the pair of these models, let’s refresh our memory with a quick backstory on the Lady-Datejust 28 collection.
The Rolex Lady-Datejust 28 introduced at Baselworld 2017
As the newest generation of the iconic luxury dress watch for women, the Lady-Datejust 28 made its debut in 2015. Its release brought about a revamped case design and updated movement. It’s a fresh take on the classic women’s Rolex watch. Up until this year, the Lady-Datejust 28 was only available in more precious versions such as yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum. There were also yellow gold and rose gold Rolesor (the combination of gold and steel) models. And now, Rolex has added two new additions to the Lady-Datejust family: the all steel version and the white Rolesor version. Let’s check them out.
Lady-Datejust 28 ref. 279160
The new Rolex Lady-Datejust ref. 279160 sports a full stainless steel 28mm case along with a stainless steel bracelet. the 28mm Oyster case size is actually the largest one available in the Lady-Datejust line. Perfect for the modern woman, the stainless steel construction is sporty chic.
The stainless steel version of the Lady-Datejust 28 has a domed bezel. In addition to the option between an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, there are a few dial colors to choose from including pink, silver, and dark gray. There’s also a choice of Roman numerals or baton stick indexes. Of course, at the 3 o’clock position we see the date window for which the collection is named after. Like (almost) all Rolex watches with the date feature, the Cylcops lens on the sapphire of the Lady-Datejust ref. 279160 magnifies the date for better legibility.
Powering the time and date functions of the Lady-Datejust 28 collection is the Rolex Caliber 2236 automatic movement. Not only does Rolex always offer mechanical movements in their ladies’ watches, they’re also manufacture movements. This means that the watch movements were built by Rolex in-house. This point is worth mentioning since most women’s luxury watches run on quartz movements. The Caliber 2236 boasts the Rolex-patented Syloxi hairspring in silicon. This mechanism improves the watch’s resistance to magnetic fields, temperature swings, and daily knocks. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour, the Caliber 2236 offers 55 hours of power reserve.
Lady-Datejust 28 ref. 279174
For a touch more luxury, there’s also the new white Rolesor Lady-Datejust 28 in steel and white gold. While the ref. 27974 is predominately in steel—the steel Oyster case and steel bracelet—it does have an 18k white gold fluted bezel. Just as a sidenote, the Rolex fluted bezel is only ever made from gold. So, even if the bezel and the rest of the Lady-Datejust 28 ref. 27974 look like it’s all the same material, those in the know will immediately recognize the white gold.
Like the full steel version, the white gold and steel Lady-Datejust 28 ref. 279174 if available on either the sporty Oyster bracelet or the dressier Jubilee bracelet. Dial colors are similar—pink, silver, and white—as are the indexes in either Roman numerals or luminous batons.
We definitely like the larger size of the Lady-Datejust 28. Contemporary yet classic, fresh yet instantly recognizable, the new Lady-Datejust 28 successfully continues the enduring legacy of Rolex’s quintessential lady’s luxury timepiece.
