Vintage Rolex Datejust Thunderbird is in overall great vintage condition. The case is in great condition with light wear, the hallmarks on the back of the one and 11 o'clock lugs are clearly visible. The numbers between the lugs are clearly visible. The "turn-o-graph" gold bezel is in great condition with light wear; the details are still sharp and prominent. The "pie-pan" dial is in overall excellent condition with light patina. The lume plots have developed patina and aged to a lovely yellow color; some of the lume plots show signs of degradation. The hour markers and hands have developed light patina. The lume in the hands has developed patina and aged to a similar color as the lume on the dial. This watch has a presidential style 18k bracelet with 19 links and the clasp is stamped "B" which corresponds to 1977. The bracelet is in overall great condition with some normal signs of wear and stretch between the links which is not uncommon.
The example we have here today is just plain gorgeous, we love the monochromatic look - the lume has all aged to a lovely shade of yellow matching the rest of the watch. The watch has a period correct presidential style bracelet with the conventional (non-hidden) clasp which is a bit of a rarity. This style bracelet really dresses up this watch a bit more and makes it more interesting. Another thing to note is that the pie-pan dial is also a "Sigma dial" which makes sense for the mid-1970s. Marked by two Sigma symbols flanking the “T Swiss T” at the dial's edge, indicating the use of gold —in its hands and hour markers. This distinction originated from a 1970s initiative by L’Association pour la Promotion Industrielle de l’Or (APIOR) to standardize the indication of precious gold in watches, a meaningful feature particularly for steel models, where stainless steel and white gold are similar in appearance.
