This Rolex 1016 is in overall attractive vintage condition. The case is in good condition with scratches, nicks, and normal signs of wear; the case has been polished. The back of the lugs show scratches and wear. The inside caseback is stamped "1016 IV.60." The caseback has an engraving that reads "E.L. KNIGHT 5530759 U.S. NAVY." The edge of the caseback also has a small hand-written number engraving. This engraving can be removed if the buyer wishes. Between the lugs show some wear and the numbers are visible. The dial has developed patina throughout and shows signs of aging and crazing; giving the watch a unique look. The dial is no longer glossy. The lume on the dial and in the hands has developed patina and aged, adding to the overall charm of the watch. The minute hand has a patch of relume in the center; this appears to have been done a long time ago. This watch has a rivet Oyster C&I USA Rolex bracelet and the clasp is stamped "78" indicating its from 1978 and a later replacement. The bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links which is not uncommon.
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966. You can split up the glossy dial variant to ones with and without chapter rings, the example we have here today has the chapter ring. The chapter ring is the circle around the edge of the dial that the minute hash marks are connected to. This little detail gives the model a vastly different look than ones without the chapter ring.
The example we are offering here is beautiful and has developed a unique look over the years. It's nice to see that this watch was actually worn and enjoyed and that is evident. The dial has taken on a patina giving it a unique look. The cool thing about vintage watches is that they all age differently and you won't find another that looks exactly like this one. This example comes with its box, outer box, chronometer papers (with matching case and movement numbers) and cigarette card!
The 1016 has really sky rocketed in value and desirability in the last few years and this is a great chance to add a well loved example to the collection.
