This OP "Zephyr" is in great, attractive vintage condition. The case is in great, honest condition with scratches and normal signs of wear throughout. The numbers between the lugs are clearly visible. The inside caseback is stamped "1008 IV.63." The gold bezel is in overall great condition with the details still prominent. The dial is in good, attractive condition with some patina throughout (hard to notice); it has some small scratches and some wear around the edge that can also be hard to notice. The lume plots are all in-tact and have developed patina and darkened. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a similar color as the lume on the dial. The minute hand is missing some lume throughout the hand.
Pre-owned Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref 1008 (1963). Rolex produced relatively small quantities of this watch between the 1950s and 1970s, making it a unique collector's item and somewhat of a cult favorite among Rolex enthusiasts. Rolex offered this model with black or silver dials, like the example we have here. The defining characteristics of this model are the unique quadrant or cross-hair dial and textured engine-turned bezel set this Rolex 1008 apart from other Oyster Perpetual watches. It's also distinguished by Dauphine hands, simple dot hour markers, and nicely aged lume. This example has a feature we don't see very often, an "underline" dial. When looking closely the dial has a small horizonal line below the SCOC text that is belived to signify the transition from radium to tritium lume. You can find these underline dials on various models from Rolex around this time (1963) and for some models the desirability can increase significantly because it takes the watch to the next level of rarity. Furthermore, the movement is stamped "ROW" which was the US import code meaning this watch was destined for the US market and we typically see these "underline" dials on US market watches - we love it when these details line up!
These watches were initially intended for men, but would be great for anyone’s wrist and due to the two-tone nature are perfect for many occasions. It’s worth noting that race car driver and automotive designer, Carroll Shelby, wore one in a Sports Illustrated add he was featured in back in 1959.
