Pre-owned Rolex Datejust OysterQuartz ref 17013 (1990) is one of the most distinct chapters in Rolex history. At a glance, it’s similar to the Datejust: 36mm Oyster case, fluted yellow gold bezel, champagne dial, two-tone steel and gold. But then you notice the sharp lines and the fully integrated bracelet, and you realize this isn’t your typical self-winding Datejust. The Oysterquartz was born in the late 1970s during the height of the quartz crisis, when Swiss watchmaking was under serious pressure from ultra-accurate battery-powered movements coming out of Japan. Rolex engineered its own quartz calibers in-house. The ref. 17013 runs on the caliber 5035, a purpose-built Rolex quartz movement finished and regulated to chronometer standards, something almost unheard of for quartz at the time. Early examples weren’t always COSC-certified, but Rolex eventually brought them into full chronometer spec. Visually, the Oysterquartz is unique in that it has an angular case profile and an integrated bracelet that flows seamlessly from the lugs. Production numbers were relatively low, and Rolex quietly discontinued the line in the early 2000s as mechanical watches regained dominance. You can still find examples, like this one, in excellent secondhand condition.
