Vintage Rolex Red Submariner 1680
The Rolex Submariner 1680 was an incredibly important addition to the brand’s line of dive watches as it was the first reference to offer a date complication on the dial. Many variations of the ref. 1680 were produced throughout its production run, including the “Red Submariner”, which is one of seven dial options and is characterized by a red Rolex logo just above the 6-hour marker. This feature was eventually replaced with a white font logo in later references, making the red dial variation among the most sought-after 1680s.
The ref. 1680 is presented in great condition, offering a case that has been polished, a newer 93150 flat-link Oyster bracelet with a stamped clasp, and a matte black dial topped with the desirable red Submariner logo as well as hour markers and Mercedes hands filled with Tritium lume. Many variations of the ref. 1680 that are currently on the market feature a thin font bezel, which replaced the original bezel with a fatter font. References that offer the original “Fat Font” bezel insert, such as the vintage Submariner that is listed here today, are a rare find. As an older pre-owned Rolex, the ref. 1680 shows moderate signs of wear, including some slight stretch on the bracelet and a faded bezel insert.
