The vintage Rolex "Paul Newman" "Panda" Daytona reference 6263 is for many people their "grail" Rolex watch. These watches feature a bold "exotic" dial with unique box markers in the chronograph registers. These Daytonas gained their nickname as Paul Newman wore a Daytona reference 6239 with a similar exotic dial, featuring a white dial, and black registers with white printing. The reference 6263 and 6265 Paul Newman dials differ slightly from earlier "Paul Newman" dials as they have a white instead of red seconds track. These watches gained the nickname "Panda" because the two colors and overall look are reminiscent of the Asian bear. These "Panda" models also feature the word "Oyster" on the dial indicating their enhanced water resistance resulting from the screw-down chronograph pushers. The present watch is a reference 6263 and features a black acrylic bezel with a tachymeter track for measuring speeds, whereas the reference 6265 features a steel bezel. This watch features a manual-winding Valjoux chronograph movement that was regulated by Rolex.
