Vintage Watch Condition Examination
This Explorer is in overall vintage condition. The case and bracelet are in great condition with some wear. The dial, hands, and caseback are later service replacements. The dial and hands are in excellent condition.
Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966.
The example we are offering here was born with a glossy dial and it was later changed to a matte service replacement. It was very common for Rolex to change and update watches when they come in for routine service and that is exactly what happened with this 1016. It's nice that the watch has retained it's correct rivet Oyster bracelet that is dated 1966 on the clasp. One neat thing about these service dials is that they offer a vintage matte look with the modern functionality of the lume still glowing.
