This Rolex Explorer II watch is in great, honest vintage condition. The case is in great condition with normal signs of wear with scratches and a few light nicks. Between the lugs the numbers are clear and very visible. The inside caseback is stamped " 1655 11.72." The bezel is in great condition with very light wear; the edge has remained sharp. The number "6" on the bezel had the paint re-applied. The dial is in excellent condition with light patina. The lume on the dial and in the hands has developed patina and aged to a striking yellow color. The orange 24 hour hand has developed some patina. This has a USA-made "oval link" bracelet with and 22 links. The bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links which is not uncommon for this style bracelet.
The Rolex 1655 Explorer is instantly recognizable by its distinctive bright orange 24-hour hand and fixed steel bezel. Introduced in 1971, this model was designed specifically for cave explorers. The bold orange hand serves a functional purpose - helping wearers distinguish between day and night in environments where natural light is absent, such as in dark caves. Initially, the 1655 wasn't a hit. Its unconventional design stood apart from other Rolex models, which limited its appeal. Moreover, its specialized use made it less attractive to the general public. Ironically, these same factors have now made it one of the most coveted and rare vintage Rolex sports models.
This 1655 features the desirable “straight” seconds hand, a detail found only on earlier examples. While subtle, it dramatically changes the overall look of the watch and is especially sought after by collectors. The lume has aged to a striking, consistent yellow, giving the watch serious character against the matte black dial. Coming directly from the family of the original owner, the watch came on a this USA Jubilee bracelet, adding yet another layer of charm and personality to this already unique design.
