This Rolex Explorer II watch is in great, honest vintage condition. The case is in great condition with normal signs of wear with scratches and a few nicks at the 9 o'clock side of the case. Between the lugs the numbers are clear and very visible. The inside caseback is stamped " 1655 11.72." The bezel is in great condition with almost no signs of wear besides some scratches around the leading edge. The dial is in great condition and has developed some very light patina. The lume on the dial and in the hands has developed patina and aged to a striking orange color. The orange 24 hour hand has developed some patina; otherwise the color has remained vibrant. This has a USA-made folded Jubilee bracelet with and 22 links. The clasp is not dated. The bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear and a bit of stretch between the links which is not uncommon for this style bracelet.
The Rolex 1655 Explorer is instantly recognizable by its distinctive bright orange 24-hour hand and fixed steel bezel. Introduced in 1971, this model was designed specifically for cave explorers. The bold orange hand serves a functional purpose - helping wearers distinguish between day and night in environments where natural light is absent, such as in dark caves. Initially, the 1655 wasn't a hit. Its unconventional design stood apart from other Rolex models, which limited its appeal. Moreover, its specialized use made it less attractive to the general public. Ironically, these same factors have now made it one of the most coveted and rare vintage Rolex sports models.
This 1655 features a "straight" seconds hand which is only found on the earlier examples. This small detail really changes the look of the watch and is sought after by collectors. We love how the lume has all aged to a lovely striking yellow color and it gives the watch some serious character.
