This Rolex Explorer II is in overall great, attractive vintage condition. The case is in overall great condition with normal signs of wear. Between the lugs show some wear and the tops of the numbers show rubbing from the bracelet; the serial is clearly visible. The bezel is in great condition with some scratches and wear; the edges are still sharp and it has retained the paint in the numbers. The inside caseback is stamped "1655 II.71." The Mark 1 dial is in good, attractive condition with some patina and wear; it has some marks/ scratches on the center of the dial that can be hard to notice. The lume on the dial and in the hands has developed patina and aged to a lovely pale yellow color. The orange 24-hour hand has developed some patina and the orange shows some fading. The hour hand has been relumed/ color corrected to match the other hands. The center black portion of the hands have developed patina. It has a stainless steel Rolex USA C&I Oyster Rivet with 11 links. Back of clasp is stamped "7-73" indicating it is from 1973 and matches the production date of the case. The C&I bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear and a bit of stretch between the links which is not uncommon for this style bracelet.
The Rolex 1655 Explorer is instantly recognizable by its distinctive bright orange 24-hour hand and fixed steel bezel. Introduced in 1971, this model was designed specifically for cave explorers. The bold orange hand serves a functional purpose - helping wearers distinguish between day and night in environments where natural light is absent, such as in dark caves. Initially, the 1655 wasn't a hit. Its unconventional design stood apart from other Rolex models, which limited its appeal. Moreover, its specialized use made it less attractive to the general public. Ironically, these same factors have now made it one of the most coveted and rare vintage Rolex sports models.
This example comes directly from the family of the original owner who managed to keep an original service receipt with corresponding serial number and mention of the C&I bracelet. When looking at the receipt closely, it shows that Rolex regulated the watch at no charge. This 1655 features a "straight" seconds hand which is only found on the earlier examples. This small detail really changes the look of the watch and is sought after by collectors. We love how the 24-hour hand faded adding to the 1655’s unique athestic!
