This vintage Rolex Explorer is in overall good, attractive vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with light signs of wear. The inside caseback has a couple punch marks indicating it may have had a dent taken out previouslly. Between the lugs show wear and scratches; the numbers are still visible. The inside caseback is stamped "II.66." The matte dial is in good, attractive condition with some darker patina that is most noticeable around the edges. The dial has some marks that can be hard to notice depending on the lighting. The dial is a slightly later matte Mk1 "Frog foot" replacement. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a lovely pale-yellow creamy color. The hands are in great condition and are service replacements filled with Super-LumiNova so they will glow. This watch has a 78360 Oyster with 11 links and no. 580 end links. The clasp is stamped "W 10" indicating it is from 1995. The bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links.
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966.
This example is circa 1966 and now features a slightly later matte Mark 1 “frog foot” dial. It would have originally left the factory with a glossy dial, but was most likely serviced in the late 1960s/ early 1970s when this matte replacement was fitted. The nickname comes from the shape of the coronet on the dial, which resembles a frog’s foot. It was very common for Rolex to update components during routine service, and that appears to be the case here. Sourced from the original family, this watch was worn, regularly maintained, and cherished for decades.
