Vintage Watch Condition Examination
This Rolex watch is in overall great vintage condition. The case has been polished and shows light wear. The bezel ring is sharp and the bezel is in great condition with light wear. The crown shows some wear. The dial is in great condition with light patina and some wear on the text and around the edge. The lume on the dial and in the hands has developed patina and are matching in color. The lume in the hands have developed a bit more patina near the base of the hand which is not uncommon. The hands have developed patina. The bracelet is a later solid link replacement and is in great condition with light stretch and wear.
Vintage Rolex Red Submariner 1680
Rolex introduced the reference 1680 around 1969 and it was in production until roughly 1979. This was the first Submariner to feature the date function and Rolex still offers date and no-date models to this day. This example has the word "Submariner" written in red text and collectors refer to these as the "Red Submariner." Rolex did this until around 1975 and then they switched to all white text. Collectors tend to gravitate towards these Red Subs and we have seen demand increase significantly in the last couple years.
This watch features a Mark IV matte black dial. The Mark IV dial is distinguished by the feet first depth rating with open 6s and red Submariner text painted directly onto the dial. This example is in overall great condition and has developed a lovely patina on the lume. The hour markers and hands have aged to a nice off white, pale yellow color giving it a great vintage aesthetic.
