A bit of history on the 5512 Rolex Sub:
It is a very early submariner that was launched in 1959. While the model series may seem simple, it is actually quite unique as compared to his successor, the Rolex 5513. To start, the 5512 was only produced for about 15 years while the 5513 was produced for over 30 years. Hence, there are many more 5513's in circulation. What is important to know about the 5512 is that it was the first Rolex to have crown guards ( to protected the winding crown ). All the prior models -the 6200, 6204, 6538, 5508, 6536 and 6536-1 were all made with no crown guards. The very early ones had "square crown guards" and have become very desirable and valuable these past 5 years. Another noteworthy characteristic of the 552, versus the 5513, is the Chronometer rating (also called four line model) that came with this watch in the mid 1960's. Rolex stopped production of the 5512 in the late 1960's and the printing on the dial changed to white ( it was previously gilt ).
