How to Choose a Yellow Gold Rolex Date

If you're still deciding which Date to buy, below are some tips for anyone looking for the best gold Rolex Date watch.

  • Solid gold or two-tone? Solid 18k yellow gold references (1503, 15038, 15238, 115238) are the warmer, dressier, and considerably more expensive choice. Two-tone Rolesor pairs an Oystersteel case and bracelet centre links with 18k gold bezel, crown, and centre links, roughly half the price of solid gold, more wearable day to day, and easier to live with if you're not sure gold is for you. Rolex never gold-plates: on both, the gold is solid.
  • Vintage or modern? Pre-1980s references (1500, 1501, 1503) have acrylic crystals, non-quickset dates, and a softer, more characterful presence — plus more variation in condition and originality. From the 15000 series onward you get sapphire crystals and quickset dates; the 115200-series, produced until around 2019, adds a sturdier movement and modern service support. Vintage rewards patience and a careful look at dial originality; modern is the safer everyday watch.
  • Bezel and bracelet. This decides how dressy the watch reads more than anything else. A fluted bezel on a Jubilee bracelet is the classic, most formal combination. A smooth or domed bezel on an Oyster bracelet is markedly more understated — closer to an Oyster Perpetual with a date. Engine-turned bezels appear on vintage references only.
  • Will 34mm work for you? It's a genuinely compact watch by current standards and sits well on wrists from about 6 to 7 inches. On larger wrists it reads deliberately vintage-dress rather than undersized — which is the appeal for many buyers. If you want the same look with more presence, the 36mm Datejust is the natural step up.
