1983 - 1988
In 1983, Rolex released the reference 16760 as first GMT-Master II, which marked the introduction of a sapphire crystal and independently adjustable 24-hour hand. Additionally, the watch was only available in stainless steel, and with a red and black, "Coke" bezel insert. The case of the reference 16760 GMT-Master II was slightly thicker (by about 0.5 mm) than its predecessors, and both the bezel and crown guards were a bit larger to match the case’s increased size. This minor design variation gave the entire watch a slightly more rounded and curved appearance, earning it the nickname, the "Fat Lady" among many members of the Rolex-collecting community.
